Statement from Chele Farley on NAFTA Victory for New York Farmers

Statement

Date: Oct. 1, 2018
Location: New York, NY

"While Kirsten Gillibrand continues to run her 2020 campaign railing against President Trump, the Administration has secured a victory for New York's hard-hit dairy farmers. The deal will finally increase Empire State market access to Canada, which is particularly important to our dairy farmers and a glimmer of hope for an industry where desperation is so high that suicide rates are on the rise.

"Dairy is an essential part of New York State's agriculture industry, accounting for nearly half of our state's total agricultural sales. Sadly, in recent years a record number of farmers have gone out of business as low milk prices forced them to sell milk for less than it costs to produce. Access to the protectionist Canadian market has long been a source of frustration for New York dairy producers.

"From her very first day in Congress, Kirsten Gillibrand has promised to rescue New York's dairy farmers, but she has failed at every turn, unable to get a bill passed to help. It takes hard work, not hashtags, to make progress in Washington. When elected, I pledge to put New York first, serve only two terms and focus on getting things done for New Yorkers."
